An Introduction to Behavioural Preferences

The underlying methodology of the Your Preferences service is firmly rooted in the renowned and proven theories of the psychologist, Carl Jung.

But that's the last time we refer to psychology or Carl Jung!

As a team leader, training manager, training provider or independent consultant, you're much more interested in what Your Preferences can actually do. So bear with us as we quickly present a beginner's guide to behavioural preferences.

Basically, there are four dimensions to our personalities:

  • Do we like to take immediate action or think things through first?
  • Are we more interested in facts or just ideas?
  • Are we solution-focused or people focused?
  • Do we prefer to be organised or do we rather go with the flow?

Within each of these four dimensions, there are two options or extremes. There's no right or wrong option within each dimension. So if you do the mathematics, there are 16 possible outcomes. Each person will have a tendency to align themself to one of these 16 outcomes and that's what we define as their "behavioural preference", which is often also known as their "type".

It's possible to describe the personality of each of the 16 types in terms of some of the characteristics of that behavioural preference. There have been many different attempts to find ways to do this, but here at Academy28, we use everyday terminology to make it easier for everyone.

So, taking one example, you may be a "planner", where success comes from taking time and concentrating on what you have to do. People trust you to get things done, completing them on schedule. You are well organised and have a common-sense approach. You work steadily towards a goal, you focus on one thing at a time and you are able to ignore distractions.
